Annecy, France
Annecy, France is called the Venice of France because of the small canal that runs through the middle of the city. After taking in the colorful restaurants and shops sitting alongside the water, you turn around to take in the vast French Alps, which you’re only getting a peak of at the base of Lake Annecy.
Getting to Annecy
In doing my research for this trip, I knew that an itinerary with Annecy and Chamonix was at the top of the list because we would be able to dip our toes into Switzerland, basing out of Geneva for this portion of the trip. Only a quick 50 minute drive from Geneva, Annecy is the perfect day trip destination to explore more of France.
Other than taking in all the incredible views of Old Town and Lake Annecy, Lac d’Annecy, you can see Chateau d’Annecy, which is a restored castle that the town of Annecy bought and turned into a museum. It dates back to the the 13th and 14th century and had some really cool, OLD pieces on display.
Palais de L’ile is the famous ship-shaped building in the middle of the canal; this building was one a prison in the 1900’s.
Shops – there are tons of little shops along the canal and old town that you can stop into to find the perfect Lac d’Annecy souvenirs.
Cathedral & Basilica
You can book a full day for 2 with Private Transportation and an English speaking driver here! (Tickets to excursions not included)
To Eat & Drink
There are many, many restaurants surrounding the lake and canal. Be sure to try the local Rhone-Alps cuisine, fondue!
With so many spots, you’re sure to find a nice seat along the canal to enjoy a glass of wine or an Aperol Spritz!
On the way
Be sure you mention to your driver that you would like to see Ponts de la Caille on the way. This land mark features two bridges, the first built in the 1800’s that is now a pedestrian bridge. You can walk out on the old bridge that soars 465 feet high (142m).
I made it about 10 feet out on the bridge and thought I was going to cry! There is also a small overlook where you can get a photo. Our driver Peter got Jacob’s photo, no way-no how for me.
